CONTENT

 

The bill would amend the Michigan Memorial Highway Act to designate the portion of Highway US-31 in Grand Traverse County between Three Mile Road and Bunker Hill Road as the "Trooper James E. Boland Memorial Highway".

The bill is a reintroduction of House Bill 6074 from the 2023-2024 Legislative Session. House Bill 6074 was reported from the House Committee on Transportation, Mobility and Infrastructure, but received no further action.

 

BACKGROUND

 

Trooper James E. Boland was born on January 11, 1945. He grew up in the Owosso/Corunna area and graduated from Corunna High School in 1963. He joined the Owosso Police Department before joining the Michigan State Police force in 1967. In 1980, he transferred to the Owosso State Police post to be closer to his family after the death of his brother. On July 26, 1987, Trooper Boland directed traffic in Traverse City for the National Governor’s Conference. As he bent to light a caution flare near the middle of an intersection, Trooper Boland was struck by a drunk driver. He later died of his injuries. He was 42 years old.
