Comments and Recommendations
Rep. Aiyash moved that the following remarks be printed in the Journal. The motion prevailed.
Rep. Zorn:
“Mr. Speaker
As my time in the legislature comes to an end, thank you Mr. Speaker for giving me a moment to reflect on the past 44 years of consecutive elected service, the last fourteen years in the state legislature, including the House and Senate. After two previous farewells, I stand before you today to make one last, but final farewell.
I would like to take a moment to express my appreciation and gratitude to our sergeants and the Michigan State Police for keeping us safe, and in line. You are a dedicated public servant. My prayer will always be to keep you safe and to return home to family.
I send a thank you to the electors of Lenawee and Monroe Counties for giving me the opportunity of a lifetime to serve them and the State of Michigan. I shall cherish the trust they have put in me for over four decades.
A special thank you goes out to all my wonderful staff members who were dedicated to the districts we served. I had the best staff, more like family, and all going on to do great things. I will mention one of those with me for eight years Shane Preston was the best policy maker who went on to work for the Department of Defense. While at our office, Shane met the love of his life Melissa Kallasides and formed the bond of marriage. Another was Caitlyn Corie who did not like government and doubted her dedication to this arena, then went on to work internationally with the United Nations.
All my staff was steadfast on the mission of serving people.
In memory of my parents who taught me the importance of community service and introduced me to public service through my father’s 30 years of elected township service, it was they who taught me that it’s not government that makes our life better, it’s you and me and what we do in our communities. Thanks Mom and Dad. I know you are with me today.
To my children Jason, Holly, Kylie, and Skylar who have supported me with understanding of time lost. Especially to Jason and Holly who have shared their father with the public for over forty years. Thank you, I love you guys!
My rock and salvation, my wife Cindy, where do I start, because I could never end our story. I cannot imagine living this life or undertaking the fast pace of public service without you. We have been a great team, of course you are the captain. I love you, Cindy, and all you have done for me, our family, and the communities we have served.
I appreciate the opportunity I have had to work together with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle, and to make friendships that will last way past our time here. While there is never enough time to embrace being together it will be our memories that will forever remain.
While having many good memories of the work we have accomplished, it has not been all work and no fun. One of those times that I still laugh about came here in the House when Speaker Pro Tempore Pohutsky gaveled me down, the first and only time that ever happened, but it is all part of the experience. So, let us
hear it again!
Throughout my tenure, I have advocated it is not about politics, its about people. It is not about getting my name on a bill or passing a bill that is signed into law, it is about helping people, especially those suffering in the quagmire of government. It is not the historical speech we make, rather it is the opening of our hearts and minds to understand.
Over these many years, I have dedicated myself to serving our community, always with the intention of doing what is best for the people of our district and state. Whether fighting for better roads, improving education, or working to bring jobs and opportunities to our region, I have advocated our shared values.
The journey has not always been easy, but every challenge has been worth the heartache just to have the honor of serving our state. But it was the faith of our community that was given to me and their commitment to our community that have been a constant source of inspiration.
I am incredibly proud of what we have accomplished together, and I will forever be grateful for the opportunity I have had to be a voice in state government.
Public service is an honorable calling, whether it was in township, county government, or here in the state legislature, it has been a humbling and grand exercise in life experiences. Our work in government is never ending as it should be. Our history shall be remembered by making our community a better place. And yes, least not that we forget our history, for history shall repeat itself with the same mistakes and hurt.
As I move on to the next chapter of my life, please know that I will always carry the memories and lessons of this journey with me. It has been an honor and a privilege, and I will forever cherish the trust placed in me.
May God Bless these hallowed halls of law and may God Bless Michigan and the United State of America.”
