Senator Wojno’s statement is as follows:
Colleagues, I have a very special guest in the north Gallery today—if Lieutenant Charles Debczak could please stand up.
I have known this young man since he’s been three years old, a very good friend of my son and I’ve watched him grow through the years, develop academically. He’s excelled his entire life—in middle school, in high school—in his freshman year he joined the ROTC. In his senior year he became captain of the cross country team, the swim team, and the track team. He was offered over $2 million in academic scholarships and he chose to attend West Point. He’s a 2021 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point where he earned a bachelor of science degree in space science, graduating with honors. Some of his assignments at West Point included Operations Sergeant Major; Operations Officer, 2nd Battalion; 4th Regiment of the United States Corps of Cadets. Some of the awards and decorations include the Army Space Badge, the National Defense Service Medal, and Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal. Upon completion of the Air Defense Artillery Officer Leader Course at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, Charles will be assigned to the 11th Air Defense Artillery Brigade at Fort Bliss, Texas. I’ve known this young man almost his entire life and I know the future has nothing but greater success in store for him. His parents, Missy and Jason Debczak are with us today. If you could please stand and also be recognized as I ask my colleagues to join me in congratulating Lieutenant Charles Debczak on his recent graduation from West Point.

Statements
The motion prevailed.
Senator Zorn’s statement is as follows:
Mr. President, we have a very special guest here today from the big town of Ida in Monroe County, a veteran of the U.S. Army, Sam Struth.
Senator Moss’ statement is as follows:
Mr. President, I also wanted to introduce my guest in the Gallery who
joined us for the very meaningful Memorial Day program earlier, my long-time
friend Barbara Seldon. Barbara Seldon entered active duty in the U.S. Army and
was honorably discharged in 1964, took advantage of the G.I. Bill and entered
college at the University of Detroit where she received her associate’s degree
in dental hygiene, bachelor’s degree and master’s degree, and was immediately
hired by the University of Detroit School of Dentistry, retiring in 2005 having
been associate professor, assistant to the dean for special projects, and
director of minority recruitment in the Department of Periodontology, Division
of Dental Hygiene. She’s currently a member of the Southfield Veterans
Commission and her three-year tour of duty taught her strong discipline,
respect for authority, and the importance of being something greater than
oneself, and it helped mold and influence her work ethic. After college, she
joined the Wolverine Chapter 67, Womens Army Corps Veterans Association and
became a member of the National Honor Guard and became captain of the National
Honor Guard. She is very active in our community and I’m so appreciative of her
friendship and the friendship of her husband, Lieutenant Colonel Felix Selden,
both of whom live in Southfield. I wanted to introduce my friend Barbara to the
Senate today.
Senator Bullock’s statement is as follows:
I, too, would like to recognize my guest in the Gallery, Mr. Barry Wood from Hastings, Michigan, who serves here as the State Commander for the American Legion, has over 22 years of service. He served six years in the Navy and then he got a little seasick and he went and enlisted in the Army for 16 years where he retired as a Chief Warrant Officer of military intelligence and it was just great sitting with him and getting to chat with him today at the wonderful service.
Senator Ananich’s statement is as follows:
I was fortunate to have a good friend of mine join me today, Arthur Woodson from Flint. He brought a friend of his who is a friend of mine, Danielle Green, a school board member and it was a pleasure to have them here and thank him for his service. I don’t know if he’s upstairs or not, but I wanted to acknowledge him.
But I also wanted to take a moment. I just realized this was my ninth Memorial Day service at the Michigan Senate. I think I can say this without a doubt—it was my most favorite and I think really the most moving ceremony I’ve been to. And I just wanted to take a moment and thank the Senator from the 10th District for taking on this and all the veterans here and my colleagues on both sides of the aisle who have served. It’s a lot of work, Mike, and you do it on behalf of all of us and I just wanted to take a moment to thank you. You did a really good job and your staff and everyone. It was a beautiful ceremony and I was proud to be a part of it. So thank you.
Senator Horn’s statement is as follows:
I was just informed that my guest has entered the Gallery. He’s in the west Gallery, Master Sergeant Alonzo Gillette from Fenton. It was such a pleasure to host him and some of the family today.
Thank you for a beautiful event, and I do want to recognize our leaders—Majority Leader Mike Shirkey and Minority Leader Jim Ananich—for the role they played in protecting the American and Michigan flags today. I think that was such a charming act that they did, sitting on the steps holding those flags to protect the flags from the wind. Thank you both, and thank you, Mr. President.
Senator Santana’s statement is as follows:
I would also like to take the liberty to acknowledge my two guests today as well, Sergeant Nathan A. Lincoln and Staff Sergeant Devin Smith who are Army National Guard recruiters here in the state of Michigan.
Senator Shirkey’s statement is as follows:
At the end of this last month we all got to enjoy a little bit of time off. Time to be with our families, enjoy the outdoors, slow down a little bit, and reflect upon all the fortunes this country provides. But most of all, remember those who gave their lives in service to this country so we might continue to enjoy the great privileges the United States of America provides. And even more important than that, is to pass down that tradition to our children, our grandchildren, and beyond. Our nation is not perfect, but she is exceptional. We must follow the model of our military men and women and in our own ways find a way to serve this great country that has given to us through God’s providence.
Here at the Michigan Legislature we take time to mark Memorial Day in our own way here in the Senate. Each of us has brought with us distinguished guests who have answered the call of liberty and given their commitment of their lives in the service of our nation. With me today I’m glad to introduce to this chamber Jeffery “Jeff” Francis, a Vietnam veteran who served in the 25th Infantry Division as an infantryman. He received some of the military’s highest awards. He was awarded the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star, an Army Commendation Medal with a “V” device for valor, and the Air Medal. After interviewing Jeff for a couple of hours over lunch recently he made it clear to me that he left eight of his nine lives in Vietnam. Thank you, Jeff, for your service and I would like my colleagues here to recognize Jeff Francis with me right now.
I also want to be sure to name a dear friend of mine, George Armstrong, who also served in Vietnam. George was a newlywed when he was drafted into the service in 1966 until his honorable discharge in 1968. He could not be with us here today. He is watching because he is suffering from Agent Orange in a home and has been for a couple of years. George, we’re sorry you’re not here today but we honor you as well.
Michigan has a proud and distinct history of service to our country. Among us are well over a half-a-million people who have signed up to ultimately sign that blank check, a reminder of how many Americans it takes to keep our country safe and free. I also want to remember those who are no longer with us, as we identified in today’s ceremony, especially those who have been lost in the theatre of war.
And may we all remember that to continue to build upon our great nation, not tear it down, is the highest form of gratitude that we can embrace to give to those who gave it all.
A moment of silence was observed in memory of U.S. military personnel
who have died in the performance of their military duties.
Senator Stamas’ statement is as follows:
I just wanted to take a moment, I see we have several other veterans who have joined us in the Gallery who have not yet been recognized and I’d ask that we just recognize any of those who have not had remarks given.
Senator McCann recognized Petty Officer Third Class Maury Kaercher, USN, who served from 1966‑1970.
Senator Bizon recognized Brian Mohlman, Michigan American Legion Membership Director, SSG Michael A. Dickinson, II Post 257, Battle Creek.
Senator McBroom recognized George LaBlonde, III, Marquette County Veterans Committee Chairman, who served in the Persian Gulf War and in Somalia.
Senator Outman recognized Corporal Terry Kunst, USA, who served from 1970-1973.
Senator Hertel recognized Michael J. Scott, USA and Army Reserve, for nine years of military service.
Senator Theis recognized Hull Technician Second Class Samuel Theis, USN, who served from 1984‑1990.
