Senator Jeremy Moss of the 11th District offered the following invocation:
Our God and God of our ancestors, bless this country and all who dwell within it. Help us to experience the blessings of our lives and circumstances—to be vigilant, compassionate, and brave. Strengthen us when we are afraid. Help us to channel our anger so that it motivates us into action. Help us to feel our fear so that we do not become numb. Help us to be generous with others so that we raise each other up. Help us to be humble in our fear, knowing that as vulnerable as we feel there are those at greater risk, and that it is our holy work to stand with them.
Help us to taste the sweetness of liberty—to not take for granted the freedoms won in generations past or in recent days; to heal and nourish our democracy, that it may be like a tree planted by the water whose roots reach down to the stream. It need not fear drought when it comes; its leaves are always green.
Source of all life, guide our leaders here with righteousness. Strengthen our hearts but keep them from hardening, that we may use our influence and authority to speak truth and act for justice. May all who dwell in this country share in its bounty, enjoy its freedoms, and be protected by its laws. May this nation use its power and wealth to be a voice for justice, peace, and equality for all who dwell on earth.
May we be strong and have courage—to be bold in our action and deep in our compassion; to discern when we must listen and when we must act; to uproot bigotry, intolerance, misogyny, racism, discrimination, and violence in all of its forms; to celebrate the many faces of God reflected in the wondrous diversity of humanity; to welcome the stranger and the immigrant and to honor the gifts of those who seek refuge and possibility here as they have since before this nation was born.
Let justice well up like waters, and righteousness like a mighty stream; and let us say. Amen.
The President, Lieutenant Governor Gilchrist, led the members of the Senate in recital of the Pledge of Allegiance.

Statements
The motion prevailed.
Senator Hertel’s statement is as follows:
Colleagues, I rise today to recognize a very important member of my team who we are sadly saying goodbye to next week. Kirsten Prelesnik joined my office as a legislative intern in January 2019. She was tasked with constituent outreach and correspondence and quickly fell into step with our office as a reliable member of our team. She took on every issue, no matter how big or small, with a positive and helpful attitude with the goal of learning and helping our constituents. She has chosen to return to our office each semester, and we are grateful she chose to spend so much of her undergraduate career with us.
In March 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, Kirsten stepped up to assist with the influx of unemployment cases reaching my office with as much effort and dedication as my full-time staff. She put in extra hours, returning calls long past 5 p.m., to ensure that every constituent was helped. Throughout the pandemic, she has played an essential role among my staff. She has taken a lead on unemployment assistance, knowing the ins and outs of every case and how best to help each constituent. We have received countless messages of gratitude from constituents for the help that she provided.
This March, she
was honored with the MSU Daniel Rosenthal Legislative Intern Award for her work
on behalf of the people of the 23rd District. Last week, she graduated from
Michigan State University’s James Madison College—my alma mater, a pretty
good one—with a dual degree in political theory and constitutional democracy,
and social relations and policy. Next week, she will be moving to Boston,
Massachusetts to continue her education at New England Law.
My staff, my constituents, and myself will greatly miss Kirsten and the heart she brings to this work, but we are incredibly proud of her and excited to see what she will achieve next. With the dedication she brings to everything she does, we know she has many more accomplishments in her future. She’s in the Gallery today; would you please help me thank her for her years of work on behalf of the people of Michigan and the people of the 23rd District?
