Rep. Amos O’Neal, from the 95th District, offered the following invocation:

“Father, in Jesus name, I come before You today asking for Your blessing over the Michigan House of Representatives. Gracious God, You said in your word that the government is on Your shoulders. God, cover and protect our elected leaders.

Give us the spirit wisdom, knowledge and understanding that we may make wise decisions for the people of this great State. Father God, bless and keep our military, law enforcement personnel, healthcare professionals and all of our front line workers who risk their lives to keep us safe. Strengthen and comfort the families who have lost loved ones from Covid-19. Provide our constituents the peace they need to make it during these challenging times.

Heavenly Father, I ask that the blessing of health, love and compassion flow in this chamber. God, bind us together in the spirit of Love and Unity. These things I pray in Christ’s name, Amen.”

Reports of Standing Committees

The Committee on Government Operations, by Rep. Mueller, Chair, reported

House Resolution No. 118.

A resolution to urge the Biden Administration and U.S. Department of State to act with the utmost urgency to secure the release of American journalist Danny Fenster from Myanmar and return him safely to the United States.

(For text of resolution, see House Journal No. 49, p. 951.)

With the recommendation that the following substitute (H-1) be adopted and that the resolution then be adopted.

Substitute for House Resolution No. 118.

A resolution to urge the Biden Administration and U.S. Department of State to act with the utmost urgency to secure the release of American journalist Danny Fenster from Myanmar and return him safely to the United States.

Whereas, On May 24, 2021, American journalist Danny Fenster, a U.S. citizen from Huntington Woods, Michigan, was detained at the Yangon International Airport in Myanmar as he attempted to board a flight to Kuala Lumpur. Mr. Fenster had been working as a managing editor in Myanmar for the news organization Frontier Myanmar, an independent news outlet based in the country, and was on his way home to the United States when he was detained; and

Whereas, Mr. Fenster has reportedly been transferred to Insein Prison, which is notorious worldwide for its inhumane conditions, abuse of inmates, and use of mental and physical torture. The reasons for his detention remain unknown, and his news organization has been unable to contact him; and

Whereas, The U.S. Department of State is monitoring the situation, but more can be done to secure Mr. Fenster’s release. The United States has a profound interest in preserving the freedom of the press worldwide in order to guarantee direct access to independent information for all people. As a nation that is deeply committed to protecting the freedoms, safety, and human rights of its citizens, U.S. officials should be making every effort to ensure that Mr. Fenster is returned home safely; now, therefore, be it

Resolved by the House of Representatives, That we urge the Biden Administration and U.S. Department of State to act with the utmost urgency to secure Mr. Fenster’s immediate, unconditional, and safe release and return to the United States; and be it further

Resolved, That copies of this resolution be transmitted to the President of the United States and the U.S. Secretary of State.

House Resolution No. 135.

A resolution to declare June 23-28, 2021, as Pollinator Week in the state of Michigan.

Whereas, Pollinators are an essential part of Michigan’s economy and key to sustaining agriculture, biodiversity, and environmental sustainability in the long and short-term future; and

Whereas, The United States Senate has been commemorating National Pollinator Week for over 14 years to bring focus on the declining population of essential pollinators and it is time for Michigan to follow suit with action; and

Whereas, Michigan pollinators such as bees, butterflies, beetles, and bats all make up an essential element to our state’s well-being. With pollinators in decline, nearly 1/3 of all food eaten is at stake and 75% of all flowering plants are at risk; and

Whereas, The Pollinator Partnership and numerous legislators are committed to educating the public about this growing issue and the importance these species play in the economy while introducing bipartisan legislation to alleviate a potential pollinator crisis; and

Whereas, This effort to educate and act is intended to secure the future of Michigan’s pollinator populations and Michigan’s vibrant agricultural economy with a continuing gaze towards sustaining this land’s natural beauty; now, therefore, be it

Resolved by the House of Representatives, That members of this legislative body declare June 23-28, 2021, as Pollinator Week in the state of Michigan.
