Rep. David W. Martin, from the 48th District, offered the following invocation:
“Heavenly Father, Creator of all things,
I stand here unworthy but profoundly grateful for Your redeeming grace.
I ask for Your blessing on the common goals of this House, as was recognized by the Psalmist, ‘how good and how pleasant it is to dwell together in unity.’
I ask for the fortitude to tell evil ‘get thee behind me,’ so that You will not turn Your face away from us.
Entering this solemn Memorial weekend, I call upon You to bless our land and comfort those who have lost a loved one in service to our Nation, ‘Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.’
All this I ask in the name of my Lord and Savior, Christ Jesus,
Amen.”

Motions and Resolutions
Reps. Anthony, Hope, Hood, Aiyash, Stone, Pohutsky, Cynthia Johnson, Young, Sneller, Sowerby, Hammoud, Ellison, Camilleri, Cavanagh, Brixie, Brabec, Neeley, Whitsett, Jones, Breen, Haadsma, Kuppa, Manoogian, Thanedar and Weiss offered the following resolution:
House Resolution No. 116.
A resolution to urge the federal government to provide equitable federal student loan forgiveness.
Whereas, There is a student loan debt crisis in the United States, with nearly 45 million people holding over $1.7 trillion in student loan debt. The average amount owed tops $30,000, with some borrowers carrying debt well into six-figures. Student loan debt is now the second highest consumer debt category behind mortgage debt; and
Whereas, The massive amount of student loan debt burdens not just those people holding the debt, but the entire economy. Because of this debt, many Americans are struggling to become homeowners, save for retirement, and contribute to the economy in other ways. Borrowers who face difficulty paying their debt face delinquency and default; and
Whereas, The federal government must act swiftly and decisively to equitably deal with the student loan debt crisis. Legislation to cancel some student loan debt and otherwise mitigate this problem has been introduced in Congress. Many have also called on the President to take executive action to address this debt. For instance, one congressional proposal provides for the cancellation of up to $50,000 of federal student loan debt for those with an annual income of $125,000 or less. Now is time to turn this or a similar proposal into reality; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of Representatives, That we urge the federal government to provide equitable federal student loan forgiveness; and be it further
Resolved, That copies of this resolution be transmitted to the President of the United States, the President of the United States Senate, the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, and the members of the Michigan congressional delegation.
The resolution was referred to the Committee on Education.
Reps. Berman, Meerman, Griffin and LaFave offered the following resolution:
House Resolution No. 117.
A resolution to express support for the nation of Israel.
Whereas, Israel is a great democracy in the Middle East and a force for good in the world. As a nation and a people, Israel and Israelis exemplify courage and perseverance in the face of historic oppression and ongoing hostility; and
Whereas, The United States shares a strong and historic bond with Israel rooted in a common belief in democratic values and a shared interest in defending those values. Since the United States became the first country to recognize Israel in 1948, the United States has repeatedly demonstrated its unwavering commitment to the security of Israel as a Jewish and democratic state; and
Whereas, Israel is a key strategic ally to the United States and has been the United States’ partner in fighting terrorism and extremism in the Middle East. Joint military exercises, intelligence sharing, and weapons development are just some of the cooperative initiatives that have ensured the safety and security of both countries; and
Whereas, Israel has been under attack from forces that seek change, not through the rule of law or peaceful protest, but through missile strikes and other terrorist tactics against innocent civilians within Israel. Israel has responded appropriately and with great restraint to protect its people from these heinous acts; and
Whereas, It is important as an increasingly vocal minority questions the relationship between the United States and Israel that we remember the bonds that connect us and reaffirm our commitment to our long-time ally. An attack against Israel is an attack against democracy; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of Representatives, That we express support for the nation of Israel and acknowledge its restraint militarily and socially amidst terrorist attacks and other oppressive forces; and be it further
Resolved, That we express the sense of the House that the rule of law must always triumph over terrorism and subversion; and be it further
Resolved, That copies of this resolution be transmitted to the President of the United States, the President of the United States Senate, the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, the members of the Michigan congressional delegation, the United States Secretary of State, and the Ambassador of Israel to the United States.
The resolution was referred to the Committee on Government Operations.
Reps. Weiss, Aiyash, Breen, Ellison, Haadsma, Hammoud, Kuppa, Manoogian, Pohutsky, Steckloff and Thanedar offered the following resolution:
House Resolution No. 118.
A resolution to urge the Biden Administration and U.S. Department of State to act with the utmost urgency to secure the release of American journalist Danny Fenster from Myanmar and return him safely to the United States.
Whereas, On May 24, 2021, American journalist Danny Fenster, a U.S. citizen from Huntington Woods, Michigan, was detained at the Yangon International Airport in Myanmar as he attempted to board a flight to Kuala Lumpur. Mr. Fenster had been working as a managing editor in Myanmar for the news organization Frontier Myanmar, an independent news outlet based in the county, and was on his way home to the United States when he was detained; and
Whereas, Mr. Fenster has reportedly been transferred to Insein Prison, which is notorious worldwide for its inhumane conditions, abuse of inmates, and use of mental and physical torture. The reasons for his detention remain unknown, and his news organization has been unable to contact him; and
Whereas, The U.S. Department of State is monitoring the situation, but more can be done to secure Mr. Fenster’s release. The United States has a profound interest in preserving the freedom of the press worldwide in order to guarantee direct access to independent information for all people. As a nation that is deeply committed to protecting the freedoms, safety, and human rights of its citizens, U.S. officials should be making every effort to ensure that Mr. Fenster is returned home safely; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of Representatives, That we urge the Biden Administration and U.S. Department of State to act with the utmost urgency to secure Mr. Fenster’s immediate, unconditional, and safe release and return to the United States; and be it further
Resolved, That copies of this resolution be transmitted to the President of the United States and the U.S. Secretary of State.
The resolution was referred to the Committee on Government Operations.
