Motions and Resolutions
Reps. Lightner, Calley, Breen, Garza, Kuppa, Liberati, Sabo and Sneller offered the following resolution:
House Resolution No. 83.
A resolution to declare April 12-April 17, 2021, as Public Safety Telecommunicators Week in the state of Michigan.
Whereas, Public Safety Telecommunicators Week is celebrated on a national level during the second week in April; and
Whereas, Emergencies can occur at any time that require police, fire, or emergency medical services. The prompt response of police officers, firefighters, and paramedics is critical to the protection of life and preservation of property. The safety of our police officers and firefighters is dependent upon the quality and accuracy of information obtained from citizens who telephone 911 emergency communications centers; and
Whereas, Public safety telecommunicators demonstrate great care and professionalism throughout the various duties of their job. Public safety telecommunicators are the first and most critical contact Michiganders have with emergency services. Public safety telecommunicators are a vital link for our police officers and firefighters by monitoring their activities by radio, providing them information, and ensuring their safety; and
Whereas, Public safety telecommunicators have contributed substantially to the apprehension of criminals, suppression of fires, and treatment of patients; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of this legislative body declare April 12-April 17 2021, as Public Safety Telecommunicators Week in the state of Michigan. We recognize the contributions that telecommunicators have made to Michigan’s communities; and be it further
Resolved, That we commend public safety telecommunicators for helping to ensure the safety of our communities throughout Michigan.
The question being on the adoption of the resolution,
The resolution was adopted.
Reps. Thanedar, Breen, Cavanagh, Garza, Kuppa, Morse, Sabo and Sneller offered the following resolution:
House Resolution No. 84.
A resolution
to urge the Congress of the United States to enact legislation to add bottled
water to the list of WIC-eligible foods.
Whereas, The federal Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) provides supplemental foods and nutrition education for low-income women who are pregnant or post-partum, infants, and children up to age five who are at nutritional risk; and
Whereas, Access to safe drinking water remains a concern for many communities across Michigan and the entire United States. Lead from aging water infrastructure and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from firefighting and manufacturing are only a few of the many contaminants of concern that can be found in drinking water; and
Whereas, The WIC population is particularly vulnerable to the negative impacts of contaminated water. During pregnancy and early childhood, even low levels of exposure to drinking water contaminants, such as lead, can have long-term impacts on brain development; and
Whereas, Federal law establishes the minimum requirements that states must follow to develop WIC food packages, but bottled water may not currently be purchased with WIC benefits. Allowing the purchase of bottled water with WIC benefits would ensure a clean, healthy source of water for WIC participants; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of Representatives, That we urge the Congress of the United States to enact legislation to add bottled water to the list of WIC-eligible foods; and be it further
Resolved, That copies of this resolution be transmitted to the President of the United States Senate, the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, and the members of the Michigan congressional delegation.
The resolution was referred to the Committee on Families, Children, and Seniors.
Reps. Bellino, Breen, Calley, Garza, Kuppa, Liberati, Morse, Sabo and Sneller offered the following resolution:
House Resolution No. 85.
Whereas, The professions of natural gas and electric service worker have existed for as long as energy has been a part of modern living; and
Whereas, These professionals maintain thousands of miles of transmission and distribution electric and natural gas lines and systems with a focus on safety, reliability, and dedication to customer service; and
Whereas, At a moment’s notice, these brave professionals work in extreme weather and face dangerous conditions in order to maintain the energy infrastructure of our state; and
Whereas, Serving Michigan for many decades, our natural gas and electric service workers are often the first responders during catastrophic events and the last to go home; and
Whereas, These crews have tirelessly worked on the front line during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensuring our communities have the safe and reliable energy they rely on; and
Whereas, It is important for Michigan to honor and recognize this workforce for their heroic efforts in keeping our lights on and our homes and businesses warm; and
Whereas, Working in and around roadways is often required by these workers, which presents a daily danger; and
Whereas, The Michigan Legislature has passed several public acts to require drivers to drive safely in work zones and provide penalties for those who do not respect these work zones; and
Whereas, These service workers exemplify hometown service and are active in caring for their communities as volunteers; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of this legislative body declare April 2021 as Natural Gas and Electric Service Workers Appreciation Month in the state of Michigan.
The question being on the adoption of the resolution,
The resolution was adopted.
