OFFICER NAGLE-WILSON MEM. HWY H.B. 6079:
SUMMARY OF HOUSE-PASSED BILL
IN COMMITTEE
House Bill 6079 (as passed by the House)
Sponsor: Representative Regina Weiss
House Committee: Transportation
Senate Committee: Transportation and Infrastructure
CONTENT
The bill would amend the Michigan Memorial Highway Act to designate the portion of Highway I-75 in the City of Hazel Park between 8 Mile Road and 10 Mile Road as the "Officer Jessica Nagle-Wilson Memorial Highway".
BACKGROUND
Officer Jessica Nagle-Wilson was born on May 23, 1976, in Warren, Michigan. She attended and graduated from Fitzgerald High School in 1994. She then attended Ferris State University, graduating with a BS in Criminal Justice in 2000, and then became a member of the Hazel Park Police Force.
On July 28, 2002, Officer Nagle-Wilson responded to a disturbance call. As she exited her vehicle, a man standing on the porch shot and fatally wounded her with a shotgun. She served with the Hazel Park Police Force for one year and seven months and passed away at the age of 26.

FISCAL IMPACT
The bill would have no fiscal impact on State or local government. The Act specifies that the Department of Transportation may provide for the erection and maintenance of markers designating the name of a highway only when sufficient private funds are available to cover the costs of erecting and maintaining those markers. As such, private funds would cover the cost of the renaming, and no State funds would be used.
