CONTENT

 

The bill would amend the Revised School Code to do the following:

 

 --    Modify the definition of "authorizing body" to include a board of a school district that did not operate grades K to 12, beginning on the bill's effective date and for three years after that date.

 --    Allow, beginning on the bill's effective date for three years after the bill's effective date, a board of school district that did not operate grades K through 12 to issue a contract to operate a strict discipline academy.

 --    Prohibit a board of a school district that did not operate grades K to 12 from issuing a contract for a district discipline academy to operate outside the district's boundaries, and specify that a contract issued by the board of a school district would not be effective after three years after the bill's effective date.

 --    Require a strict discipline academy to assess pupil progress using at least the Michigan Student Test of Education Progress (M-STEP) or the Michigan Merit Exam, as applicable.

The bill would have no fiscal impact on the State or local intermediate school districts, school districts, or public school academies.
