Pastor Paula Miller, Pastor of St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church in Lincoln Park, offered the following invocation:

“We ask for blessings to be poured out upon all who gather here today to work for the betterment of all who live in our richly diverse state. Let us remember that we are called here together for a purpose greater than ourselves.

May each of us use our tongues to speak words of loving truth in every situation, may we use our eyes to look kindly upon all our sisters and brothers, may we use our ears to hear the cries of the needy, and may we use our hands to reach out across walls that may divide us to recall the real reason we were elected - to enact policies and laws that will bring forth the best in each person, for their welfare and their growth.

Let our duties to others be foremost in our minds as we join in our conversations, respecting our colleagues, to effectively address the needs of our people. May we be filled with wisdom and courage, with justice and integrity, and with strength and patience to bring about a deeper sense of community that truly cares for one another.

Bless each member of this House of Representatives; bless their deliberations, their disagreements, and their decisions. May each know how vital their work is and how important their service is to the state of Michigan. Amen!”
