Rev.
D.W. Tolbert, Pastor of New Hope Baptist Church in Muskegon, offered the
following invocation:
“Eternal God our Father! The Alpha
and Omega God; the, great all wise and powerful Jehovah, we bless Your name
today! From the rising of the sun, until the going down of the same, Your name
is worthy to be praised!
We come before You Heavenly God,
in the name of Jesus, the Christ; He who died for the sins of the world. We
acknowledge You as the only true and living God, to whom we bow in humble
submission to Your way and Your will!
Dear God, we ask that You forgive
us of all our short comings, our sins, and our reluctance to preform Your
revealed will, and to walk in Your disclosed ways. Thank You for being a God
justice, but also a God of relentless grace and mercy!
Dear Heavenly Father, as we stand
here today at this time in our Michigan State House of Representatives, to call
upon You to firmly establish Your presence among all of these men and women who
have been elected to serve and represent the citizens of this State! Thank You
dear God for each of them, and those who work with them!
I ask that You shower them will
special wisdom, knowledge, understanding that would enable them to make
decisions that will be beneficial to all of the citizens of this State, and
their actions would be a blessing that will cross all socioeconomic barriers
that often serve to separate the citizens of this beautiful land. Renew within
each of a heart of love and compassion for all of Your entire creation!
Thank You for the opportunity You
have given each them to serve the people of our State. Help them to act with character
and conviction; help them to listen with understanding and good will; help them
to speak with charity and restraint. Give them a spirit of service. Remind them
that they are stewards of Your authority. Guide them, Holy Father, to be the
leaders Your people need. Help them to see the humanity and dignity of those
whom they disagree, and to treat all persons with the reverence Your creation
deserves.
We thank You that we are blessed
to live in a land where we are free; free to enjoy the blessings You have
provided, the enjoyment of one another, and the freedom to choose and seek Your
will for our individual and collective destiny.
We ask God that You bless all
elected leaders, and staff persons, at all levels of government in our
nation—national, state, and local.
Please be with
our men and women who are serving in the ranks of our military in distant lands
and in dangerous conditions! Thank You for their service, and thank You for
those who have giving their very lives for this wonderful nation. Please
provide comfort and the balm of healing to their families and friends.
Now, dear God,
keep us and guide us, we will always continue to look to You for all of our
needs, all of our help, and our joy! We ask this as Your sons and daughters,
confident in Your goodness and Your love.
It is
the matchless name of Your Son, and our Christ, that we pray this pray—in Jesus
name—Amen!”
