Gracious God, the women and men who are gathered in this place today were chosen by the people of this state, but they are here to perform a task that has been ordained by You. To government You have given the sacred task of providing for the freedom, security, and flourishing of all; the responsibility to speak for those who have no voice or who have been silenced; the duty to marshal the will and the resources of the state for the good and well-being of all.

Grant wisdom, O God, that the decisions that are made on this day honor both the complexity of the issues and the pressing needs of constituents.

Grant charity, that colleagues of different opinions can work with one another in mutual respect.

And grant both courage and humility, that we all might be faithful stewards of the particular tasks that You have called us to fulfill.

I ask Your blessing upon this body and all elected officials of this state; upon our urban, suburban, and rural communities; upon our nation and upon this world which You so dearly love. Amen.
