Almighty God, we give thanks for this great state that we live in and its beauty.

Lord, we give thanks that You choose our leaders—that You have chosen these men and women to lead and guide us in our government. Father, I pray, Lord, for Your favor to be upon them and their families. I pray that You would bless their families, their children, and their grandchildren, for the sacrifice that families make so that they can lead our great state.

Almighty God, I pray that favor will be upon these men and women—that they will walk in Your favor, and that joy and peace will be upon them and their homes. Lord, that You would give them wisdom and discernment in the governing decisions that they make. Father, thank You for the sacrifice that this job is a 7/24 job, and, Lord, that You would bless them richly for their servants’ hearts.

Lord, we just give thanks and we pray economic favor upon our great state—that as companies are making choices, that they would be drawn to this great state and we would continue to just see economic growth and favor.

Lord, let this be a place where healthy debate can take place, where good legislation comes to the surface, and where wisdom prevails. Lord, I pray for Your peace and Your favor to be upon these men and women today. Thank You, Lord, for their servants’ heart and the service that they do this great state.

We pray in Your almighty name. Amen.

Statements

Senator Bieda asked and was granted unanimous consent to make a statement and moved that the statement be printed in the Journal.

The motion prevailed.

Senator Bieda’s statement is as follows:

Colleagues, I rise today on behalf of straight, gay, bisexual, and transgender Michiganders to say “thank you.” For years, you could get married on a Sunday and be legally fired from your job, kicked out of your apartment, or denied service at a restaurant on a Monday. Well, that’s beginning to change, because now you could seek justice on a Tuesday.

Today is the first day that Michiganders of all races, creeds, beliefs, religions, and sexual orientations are fully protected under the law. This is all thanks to a decision handed down by the Michigan Civil Rights Commission yesterday. With over 63 percent of Americans supporting equal rights for their LGBTQ neighbors, it’s about time somebody finally makes the right decision. The folks in this chamber have used every excuse in the book to marginalize our fellow Michiganders. They have spread lies and falsehoods about the teachings of the Bible, ignoring Jesus’ fundamental teaching to love thy neighbor. In fact, just this weekend, Pope Francis told a gay man that, “God made you like this. God loves you like this. The pope loves you like this, and you should love yourself and not worry about what people say.” And they’ve often searched far and wide to justify their inaction on every single bill that my colleagues and I have introduced to expand the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act, and to codify basic rights into law.

Colleagues, those excuses have run dry. No doubt there will be those who will try to argue that the Civil Rights Commission decision was a wrong one, and they’re going to make a number of arguments. One, they say there is no authority granted to the Civil Rights Commission. Well, that is false. The Michigan Civil Rights Commission was created and codified in the Michigan Constitution of 1963. Surely, we have to recognize the power vested in this commission by the Michigan Constitution. Another argument they’ll say is that the Michigan Civil Rights Commission is unelected. That is simply not true. Just like every other commission, the members of this commission were appointed by a democratically elected, and in this case, Republican Governor. Finally, they might say that the Civil Rights Commission should not have the power to interpret the law. Well, again, this is false. In fact, this very chamber created an Environmental Rules Review Committee consisting of members appointed by the Governor to review and interpret environmental rules. To argue that one applies and the other doesn’t is simply hypocrisy.

This chamber no longer has the authority to create second-class citizens. So today, I want to say “thank you” to the Michigan Civil Rights Commission on behalf of all Michiganders, and I would like to say “thank you” to each of them for their bold statement.
