Statements
Senators Warren and Bieda asked and were granted unanimous consent to make statements and moved that the statements be printed in the Journal.
The motion prevailed.
Senator Warren’s statement is as follows:
Good morning colleagues. I rise today to recognize Equal Pay Day, a day to raise critical awareness of and support for efforts to reduce the gender pay gap. This date symbolizes how far into the current year—so today, April 10, 2018—that women must work to earn what men earned in the previous year through December 31, 2017.
Women in the United States still experience an overwhelming wage gap, earning 80 cents for every dollar that their male counterparts are paid for doing the exact same job. Unfortunately, the numbers in our state are even worse. Michigan women earn only 78 cents for every dollar their male counterparts receive, leaving our state 32nd in the nation for parity in employment earnings. This gender pay inequity is estimated to cost the average female more than $500,000 over the course of her lifetime. As more and more women are becoming heads of households, gender discrimination in pay doesn’t just affect women, it affects our families and our economy as a whole. In this chamber, we have the opportunity to erase this inequitable practice.
Last year, I was proud to join with several of my colleagues in introducing a pay equity bill package comprised of Senate Bill Nos. 317-328. This legislative package would take several steps to ameliorate the gender pay disparity. It would strengthen the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act to make it clears that sex-based wage discrimination is illegal under Michigan law. It would increase penalties for wage discrimination based on gender. It would establish a pay equity study commission, and it would allow employees to find out what their co-workers earn so that they can negotiate in a more informed way, and ultimately, hold their employers accountable for wage discrimination if and when it exists. These common-sense bills deserve our attention and, frankly, our action.
Just last week, two of my youngest constituents, both 8-year-old girls from Abbot Elementary in Ann Arbor, mailed me a petition that they had organized to fight to end the gender wage gap. While I am incredibly proud of these two, no 8-year-old should be worried that the boys in their class will make more money than they do for doing the same job just because of their gender. We can and must change this. If we don’t act, current projections are that it will take to the end of 2086 for women in Michigan to achieve pay equity. It is for this reason today, women and men around our state and the nation are participating in activities for Equal Pay Day.
On each of your desks you should find what I think is frankly a pretty delicious chocolate chip cookie—well, 78 percent of a chocolate chip cookie. As you enjoy it today, I would like to ask you to please take a moment and not only recognize the contributions of the women around you, but also reflect on your ability and obligation to help bring women equality in all facets of life—including pay.
Senator Bieda’s statement is as follows:
I would like to take this time to honor the memory of Neva Blumberger, who passed on March 23, 2018 at the age of 100. She was born July 10, 1917. Neva saw history being made before her eyes. Loved by many and cherished for her dedication to enriching the lives of children and the community, Neva was a member of the Roseville Optimist Club and sat on the board for 22 years. The proud mother of two, grandmother of five, great-grandmother of seven, and great-great-grandmother of two, Neva is survived by many nieces and nephews, as well as her adoring cat, Mollie.
Her tireless efforts to better the youth of her community and her long life’s many accomplishments are deserving of the utmost respect and distinction. May her life lessons live on through her family and the children who looked up to her, and may she rest in peace.
A moment of silence was observed in memory of Neva Blumberger, Roseville community activist.
