Rev. Tom Seppo, Chaplain of St. Clair County Sheriff’s Department in Port Huron, offered the following invocation:
“Dear Heavenly Father, we gather today to commemorate Patriot’s Day, the 16th anniversary of one of our country’s worst tragedies, and mourn the unprecedented loss on U.S. soil. We honor the innocent people whose lives were so quickly taken. We also remember their families and friends who still live with the sorrow and pain of their loss. Continue to be their comfort and strength.
Lord, we especially recognize the emergency responders - policeman, firefighters, and emergency medical personnel – who became national heroes for doing their job. They risked – and many lost - their lives, to save and recover those who were caught in this terrorist attack. Help us show our gratefulness in acts of kindness and service to our fellowman.
God, we would be remiss if we did not take a moment to remember our military personnel who are still protecting our freedom by serving and fighting, at home and abroad, to make our country secure, and preserve our cherished freedoms. Jesus, keep them safe and guard their lives.
Father, in the weeks following 9/11, American citizens showed resolve and solidarity against terrorism and its’ evil forces. It brought our country together as never before. Help us today, in light of recent events of division and hate, to go back to the foundational principles that our great nation was built on – love of God, love of mankind, and love of country. Help us as we defend the very essence of what we, as Americans are, and what this flag flying so proudly, represents. Our trust in You and patriotism for these United States, has pulled us through some tough times. Unite us as we continue the pursuit of freedom and justice for all. In the most powerful name of Jesus, I pray, amen.”
