     A bill to amend 1976 PA 451, entitled

 

"The revised school code,"

 

(MCL 380.1 to 380.1852) by adding section 1348.

 

THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MICHIGAN ENACT:

 

     Sec. 1348. (1) Except as provided in subsection (2), beginning

 

September 1, 2018, a public school shall not use the term

 

"redskins" for the following:

 

     (a) A mascot.

 

     (b) A name or nickname of the public school.

 

     (c) A name or nickname of an athletic team.

 

     (d) A student group or club.

 

     (e) Any other group or entity operated or sanctioned by the

 

public school.

 

     (2) Not later than January 1, 2019, a public school using the

 


term "redskins" as described in subsection (1) on or before the

 

effective date of the amendatory act that added this section shall

 

do all of the following:

 

     (a) Select and begin using a new mascot, or school or athletic

 

team name or nickname, as applicable, and shall discontinue the use

 

of the term "redskins" as described in subsection (1).

 

     (b) Refrain from purchasing or acquiring any uniform,

 

yearbook, newspaper, program, or other material bearing the term

 

"redskins" for distribution or sale to pupils, school employees,

 

board members, volunteers, or the general public.

 

     (c) Refrain from purchasing, acquiring, or constructing a

 

marquee, sign, scoreboard, banner, or any other temporary or

 

permanent fixture bearing the term "redskins".

 

     (d) Refrain from distributing any sponsorship or fund-raising

 

materials that include the term "redskins".

 

     (e) Refrain from using the term "redskins" on any website or

 

social media maintained by the public school.

 

     (f) Develop and implement a plan to discontinue the use of and

 

to replace any item described in this subsection bearing or

 

including the term "redskins" purchased, acquired, or constructed

 

before September 1, 2018 no later than the end of the second school

 

year after the effective date of the amendatory act that added this

 

section.

 

     Enacting section 1. This amendatory act takes effect 90 days

 

after the date it is enacted into law.
