     A bill to amend 1976 PA 451, entitled

 

"The revised school code,"

 

(MCL 380.1 to 380.1852) by adding section 1293.

 

THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MICHIGAN ENACT:

 

     Sec. 1293. (1) A school district, intermediate school

 

district, or public school academy shall not prohibit a pupil's

 

parent or legal guardian from attending, participating in, or

 

volunteering at an event, activity, or program at school or

 

sponsored by the school district, intermediate school district, or

 

public school academy on the basis that the parent or legal

 

guardian has a criminal felony conviction unless that conviction

 

involved either of the following:

 

     (a) A crime that is a listed offense.

 

     (b) A crime involving child abuse.


     (2) As used in this section:

 

     (a) "At school" means that term as defined in section 1230g.

 

     (b) "Conviction" and "listed offense" mean those terms as

 

defined in section 1535a.

 

     (c) "Felony" means that term as defined in section 1 of

 

chapter I of the code of criminal procedure, 1927 PA 175, MCL

 

761.1, or a violation of a law of the United States or another

 

state that is designated as a felony or that is punishable by death

 

or by imprisonment for more than 1 year.

 

     Enacting section 1. This amendatory act takes effect 90 days

 

after the date it is enacted into law.
