Senate Bill 1177 as passed by the Senate

Sponsor:  Sen. Margaret E. O'Brien

House Committee:  Military and Veterans Affairs

Senate Committee:  Veterans, Military Affairs and Homeland Security

Complete to 12-12-18

Senate Bill 1177 would amend Public Act 8 of 1897 to require the Michigan State Capitol Commission to do all of the following:

·         Provide within the State Capitol Building recognition for the contributions of veterans to this state.

·         Display within the State Capitol Building one or more suitable plaques commemorating the Grand Army of the Republic and the services of Michigan residents in the Armed Forces of the United States and the Michigan National Guard.

The bill would also remove outdated provisions that, among other things, designated a room in the State Capitol Building as the Michigan veterans’ headquarters and provided for the compensation of its custodian.

The bill would take effect 90 days after it is enacted.

MCL 32.231 and 35.232

The bill would result in minor costs to the Michigan State Capitol Commission within the legislature to support the cost of one or more commemorative plaques. Necessary funds would be available from the Michigan State Capitol Historic Site Fund for maintenance and improvement of the State Capitol.
