Rep. Ed McBroom, from the 108th District, offered the following invocation:

“Dear Father in heaven,

I am so broken by the death of my friend, Representative Peter Pettalia. His sudden departure is a shock to all of us. My emotions are so mixed as I think about my six years with Pete- he could make me so angry and yet some of my best memories and greatest times of laughter here were with him. He loved life. He loved his family and his job. He loved You and sought to follow You. He has left all of us with such full and wonderful memories. Father, You promise comfort to those who mourn- comfort us. Please comfort his wife Karen, children Anna and Peter, and grandchildren Mia and Bella. Comfort all of his friends who mourn. We know that You know about mourning. You are grieved by all the suffering in this world that has fallen. You even demonstrated Your compassion and grief at the tomb of Lazarus even though You knew You would raise him up again. Thank You for mourning with us for allowing us to weep for our loss.

Father we are shocked by this yet You are not surprised. You knew the times and seasons of Pete’s life and know mine as well. You know how many breaths each of us have left. In Your sovereignty and providence You have taken Peter from us and left us to remember the brevity of life and the length of eternity. Everyday life distracts us continually from this truth but moments of death and loss remind us that the eternal questions of our relationship with You and with each other matter more than any petty, material, or earthly thing. You have provided a way to have hope- real assurance for eternity and for peace with You. Peter knew this and could tell us now that it is truly what is most urgent in every life. Your son, Jesus Christ was Peter’s hope and He is ready for each of us. That is why, when we know Him, we can mourn with hope- assurance of the guarantee of eternal life- because we know the resurrection to new life is not out of Your power. You have all the power, nothing is impossible with You. Therefore Father, it is my prayer today that beyond the temporary comfort for all of us that we need in this moment, that You would touch each heart touched by Peter to know Your call to salvation and hope. I pray You would fulfill Your promise to work all things together for good to those that love You in a way that unites Your people together again, where there will be no more sadness or tear drops or sorrow. Pour out this, Your grace on us now I pray.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
