House Bill 5006 as enacted

Public Act 74 of 2016

Sponsor:  Rep. Tom Cochran

House Committee:  Transportation and Infrastructure

Senate Committee:  Transportation

Complete to 1-10-17

SUMMARY:

The bill amends the Michigan Memorial Highway Act to designate the portion of highway Business Route I-96 within the city limits of Lansing as the "Lansing Firefighter Dennis E. Rodeman Memorial Highway."

MCL 250.1005a

BACKGROUND:

Dennis Rodeman, a seven-year veteran of the Lansing Fire Department, died at 35 after being struck by a hit-and-run driver on South Cedar Street, near Jolly Road, in September of 2015 while collecting money with department members for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, according to news sources.  Rodeman also served a tour of duty in Iraq with the U.S. Marine Corps.

FISCAL IMPACT:

Section 2 of the Michigan Memorial Highway Act indicates that the State Transportation Department shall only provide for the erection of suitable markers indicating the name of the highway "when sufficient private contributions are received to completely cover the cost of erecting and maintaining those markers."  As a result, the bill has no state or local fiscal impact.
