Rep. Kenneth Kurtz, from the 58th District, offered the following invocation:
“Eternal God and Heavenly Father, we are grateful for this day, it is the day that You have made. May we rejoice and be glad in it as we share with one another, as we deal with those very important issues that affect our personal lives, the lives of our families, the lives of our communities and the lives of those within this great state. We thank You for Your mercy, Your love and Your care. We are especially thankful for the children that are here to observe this capitol and its functions. Grant to them safety and a very bright future here in this great state. As we deliberate, as we talk, as we share our opinions, might we be mindful that we are a people who desire to do the best around us.
In Jesus name I pray, Amen.”

Rep. Howrylak, having reserved the right to explain his protest against the passage of the bill, made the following statement:
“Mr. Speaker and members of the House:
I voted against this bill because it comes one day before an organization was scheduled to submit petition signatures for a citizen initiative to raise the minimum wage. This bill eliminates the statutory section addressed in that initiative, thus rendering the successfully collected petitions moot. This bill circumvents the will of the Michigan electorate by impeding on their ability to vote on this citizens’ initiative. The bill could have been adopted in such a way as to preserve the integrity of the initiative process.”
