House Resolution No. 286.
A resolution to declare June 2, 2012, as Trails Day in the state of Michigan.
Whereas, In 1987, President Ronald Reagan commissioned a report from the President's Commission on Americans Outdoors; and
Whereas, The report recommended that all Americans be able to go out their front doors and within fifteen minutes be on trails; and
Whereas, The report also recommended that those trails wind through their cities and towns and bring them back without retracing steps; and
Whereas, The recommendation, dubbed Trails for All Americans, became the impetus behind several public and private parties joining American Hiking Society in launching National Trails Day in 1993; and
Whereas, America's 200,000 miles of trails allow us to access the natural world for recreation, education, exploration, solitude, inspiration, and much more; and
Whereas, With obesity rates skyrocketing, exercise is increasingly important and trails provide a wide variety of opportunities for being physically active;
Whereas, Trails take us to good physical and mental health by providing a chance to breathe fresh air, get hearts pumping, and escape from stresses; and
Whereas, Trails Day has grown exponentially since 1993 until in 2011 there were 2,063 events, 330,000 participants, 7,626 miles hiked or biked, 799 trail projects completed, and 188,833 volunteer hours invested that were worth $4 million in labor; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of this legislative body declare June 2, 2012, as Trails Day in the state of Michigan.
