House Resolution No. 133.
A resolution to declare September 2011 as Preparedness Month in the state of Michigan.
Whereas, This September marks the 10th anniversary of the tragic events of September 11, 2001, which united our country and illuminated the need to prepare for and respond to all types of emergencies, including natural disasters and potential terrorist attacks; and
Whereas, Preparedness is a shared responsibility. Individuals, families, businesses, and communities must collaborate to prepare for emergencies of all kinds; and
Whereas, September serves as a month to educate and empower Americans to develop emergency action plans at home, in the workplace, and in the community; and
Whereas, It's important to learn what kinds of disasters, both natural and man-made, are most likely to occur in the area, how notifications and warnings will be communicated, and the community’s plans for warning and evacuation; and
Whereas, An emergency supply kit may save lives in the event of an emergency, and should contain: a three-day supply of non-perishable food, water for drinking and sanitation, battery-powered radio, flashlight, first aid kit, whistle, dust mask, can opener, local maps, prescription medications, cash or traveler's checks, important documents, change of clothing, fire extinguisher, matches, and mess kits; and
Whereas, Families are encouraged to develop and regularly review a family emergency plan to determine how to contact one another, how to get back together, and what to do in different situations; and
Whereas, Employers should develop a plan in case employees cannot go home and make sure appropriate supplies are on hand; and
Whereas, Michigan has weathered many hardships, but in times of need, Michiganders have always pulled together to help our neighbors prepare for, respond to, and recover from extraordinary challenges; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of this legislative body declare September 2011 as Preparedness Month in the state of Michigan. We recognize and honor the achievements of our first responders and emergency personnel and encourage all citizens to educate and prepare themselves for emergencies of all kinds.
