A resolution to declare September 21, 2012, as Alzheimer’s Action Day in the state of Michigan.

Whereas, Alzheimer’s Action Day is an opportunity to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s disease and the need for more education, support and research; and

Whereas, Tens of thousands of families across Michigan are affected by this disease; and

Whereas, There are more than 35 million people living with dementia worldwide; and

Whereas, Alzheimer’s disease is the only cause of death among the top ten in America without a way to prevent, cure, or even slow its progression; and

Whereas, It is going to take all of us to end this disease, but together we can move toward a world without Alzheimer’s; now, therefore, be it

Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of this legislative body declare September 21, 2012, as Alzheimer’s Action Day in the state of Michigan. We join with organizations and individuals around the globe to recognize this occasion.

A resolution to declare September 2012 as Alzheimer’s Month in the state of Michigan.

Whereas, The Alzheimer’s Association is observing World Alzheimer’s Month this September; and

Whereas, Due to the soaring global prevalence and costs of Alzheimer’s disease worldwide, Michigan is recognizing the entire month of September as Alzheimer’s Month; and

Whereas, Alzheimer’s disease, the sixth-leading cause of death in the United States, and the only cause of death among the top 10 in the country that cannot be prevented, cured, or even slowed, is a public health crisis causing hardship and heartbreak to many individuals, families, caregivers, and communities; and

Whereas, 5.4 million Americans are now living with Alzheimer’s disease, with one additional person diagnosed every 68 seconds; and

Whereas, Alzheimer’s disease tragically robs individuals of their memories and leads to progressive mental and physical impairments; and

Whereas, This fatal disease represents a serious and growing threat to the health of our state; and

Whereas, We recommit to improving its detection and treatment, finding a cure, and standing with all whose lives are affected by this terrible disease; now, therefore, be it

House Resolution No. 319.

A resolution to declare September 19, 2012, as Don’t Text and Drive Day in the state of Michigan.

Whereas, Ensuring the health and safety of all citizens traveling on Michigan roads and highways is a significant concern; and

Whereas, Text messaging is becoming the main mode of communication for most American teenagers, with half of all teens sending between 21 and 70 text messages per day; and

Whereas, A survey conducted by AT&T shows that 43% of all American teenage drivers admitted to texting while driving even though 97% recognize the danger that comes with it; and

Whereas, According to the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, traffic accidents are the number one cause of teen deaths in the United States; and

Whereas, Sending or reading a text message has the driver of an automobile take their eyes off the road for an average of five seconds, significantly increasing the chances of collision; and

Whereas, A driver sending a text message while driving not only jeopardizes their own safety, but also the safety and well-being of their passengers, pedestrians, and other drivers on the road; and

Whereas, Safety agencies and telecommunications providers across the nation, including the National Safety Council, National Organizations for Youth Safety, the Wireless Association, AT&T, the U.S. Department of Transportation and many others agree on the important task of raising awareness about the dangers of texting while driving; now, therefore, be it

House Resolution No. 320.

A resolution to declare September 21, 2012 as POW/MIA Recognition Day in the state of Michigan.

Whereas, The United States has fought in many wars. Thousands of Americans who served in those wars were captured by the enemy or listed as missing in action; and

Whereas, It has always been the creed of those who wear a military uniform never to leave a fallen comrade on the battlefield. On this day we pay tribute to those who are missing in action or have been taken prisoner of war and never returned home; and

Whereas, To date, a total of 83,467 Americans are listed as prisoners of war or missing in action since World War II. This includes 73,681 in World War II, 7,951 in the Korean War, 1,657 in Vietnam, 127 in the Cold War, and 6 in Desert Storm and Iraqi Freedom; and

Whereas, We as a nation can never collectively rest until we account for all those men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice to their country; and

Whereas, We express our deepest gratitude to these patriots in both words and actions, knowing they were fighting to protect our rights and freedoms; and

Whereas, Many American prisoners of war were subjected to brutal and inhuman treatment by their enemy captors in violation of international codes and customs for the treatment of prisoners of war, and many such prisoners of war died from such treatment; and

Whereas, Many of these Americans are still missing and unaccounted for, and the uncertainty surrounding their fates has caused their families to suffer acute hardship; and

Whereas, Their work will not be complete, nor will our commitment be fulfilled, until they come home; and

Whereas, The stark MIA/POW flag will fly proudly near the U.S. and state of Michigan flags on September 21, serving as a commanding reminder that the duty of those who are missing in action or prisoners of war is finished, but ours continues as we seek to find, repatriate and honor these courageous men and women; now, therefore, be it

House Concurrent Resolution No. 61.

A concurrent resolution to urge the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to deny Trunkline Gas Company’s proposal to abandon a vitally important natural gas pipeline in Michigan.

Whereas, Trunkline Gas Company is proposing to convert 770 miles of natural gas pipeline that is critical for serving Michigan’s energy needs into an oil pipeline that will not benefit the state. The natural gas pipeline proposed to be converted supplies natural gas to more than 1.7 million Michigan homes and businesses. If Trunkline’s proposal is approved, Michigan could face serious reliability and service issues; and

Whereas, The removal of the pipeline may lead to higher prices for heating fuel, particularly impacting our most vulnerable citizens. Hundreds of thousands of Michiganders struggle to keep their homes warm during the winter months and seek financial assistance to pay their heating bills. Unfortunately, in recent years, public and private programs offering to help these families have been stretched thin. Trunkline should not be allowed to abandon a pipeline that may raise Michigan’s natural gas prices and hurt our most vulnerable citizens; and

Whereas, Trunkline’s pipeline is a key part of the natural gas infrastructure in Michigan. The pipeline links abundant domestic natural gas supplies in Texas, Louisiana, and the Gulf of Mexico to Michigan’s abundant natural gas storage fields. Natural gas is pumped into these underground fields during the summer and then released in the winter when regional demand for heating fuel is high. Impairing this supply access through limitation of the interstate transport infrastructure could have devastating impacts on natural gas accessibility in Michigan and other Midwest states; and

Whereas, Allowing Trunkline to abandon this pipeline is unwise and ill-advised. Natural gas is a clean and efficient fuel that produces vital heat and electricity. The use of more natural gas from all domestic formations only means that natural gas will play an ever more important role in ensuring the country has an adequate supply of affordable energy. We need to increase our natural gas infrastructure, not decrease it; now, therefore, be it

Resolved by the House of Representatives (the Senate concurring), That we urge the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to deny Trunkline Gas Company’s proposal to abandon a vitally important natural gas pipeline in Michigan; and be it further

Resolved, That copies of this resolution be transmitted to the chairman of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.
