HOUSE BILL No. 5943

 

September 25, 2012, Introduced by Reps. Muxlow, Hughes, LaFontaine, Callton, Zorn, Ananich, Ouimet, Damrow, Stapleton, Wayne Schmidt and Gilbert and referred to the Committee on Judiciary.

 

     A bill to amend 1969 PA 287, entitled

 

"An act to regulate pet shops, animal control shelters, and animal

protection shelters; to establish uniform procedures and minimum

requirements for adoption of dogs, cats, and ferrets; and to

prescribe penalties and civil fines and to provide remedies,"

 

(MCL 287.331 to 287.340) by adding section 8b.

 

THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MICHIGAN ENACT:

 

     Sec. 8b. (1) An animal control shelter or animal protection

 

shelter shall not permit a person to adopt an animal unless the

 

animal control shelter or animal protection shelter has first

 

searched for that person on an animal abuse registry. If a person

 

seeking to adopt an animal is listed on an animal abuse registry,

 

an animal control shelter or animal protection shelter shall

 

consider that fact in determining whether to permit that person to

 

adopt an animal.

 

     (2) As used in this section, "animal abuse registry" means an


 

animal abuse registry created by the department of state police

 

under Logan's law.

 

     Enacting section 1. This amendatory act does not take effect

 

unless Senate Bill No. ____ or House Bill No. 5942(request no.

 

06306'12) of the 96th Legislature is enacted into law.
