SUMMARY AS ENACTED
Senate Bill 582 (as enacted) PUBLIC ACT 282 of 2012
Sponsor: Senator Tom Casperson
Senate Committee: Transportation
House Committee: Transportation
CONTENT
The bill amended the Michigan Vehicle Code to prescribe a maximum length of 75 feet for particular vehicle combinations used to transport boats from the manufacturer; and eliminate a limit on the number of axles that a semitrailer longer than 50 feet may operate with on a designated highway.
The bill took effect on July 5, 2012.
The Code prescribes maximum lengths for different types of vehicles operating on highways in the State. For a combination of a truck and semitrailer or trailer, or a truck tractor, semitrailer, and trailer, or truck tractor and semitrailer or trailer, designed and used exclusively to transport assembled motor vehicles or bodies, recreational vehicles, or boats, the maximum length is 65 feet. Under the bill, for any of those combinations designed and used to transport boats from the manufacturer, the maximum length is 75 feet.
The Code also prescribes maximum lengths for different types of vehicles operating on designated highways (highways approved by the Michigan Department of Transportation or a local authority with respect to highways under its jurisdiction). For truck tractor and semitrailer combinations, there is no overall length limit; however, the semitrailer may not exceed 53 feet. The bill eliminated a provision prohibiting the operation of a semitrailer longer than 50 feet with more than three axles on the semitrailer.
