A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 5542 AS INTRODUCED 4-18-12

The bill would amend the Michigan Vehicle Code to specify that the Secretary of State could not require an applicant for an original or renewal operator's or chauffeur's license to provide emergency contact information as a condition of obtaining a license.

However, the SOS could inquire whether an operator or chauffeur would like to provide emergency contact information.  Emergency contact information obtained could only be disclosed to a law enforcement agency of this state or of the United States for law enforcement purposes. The bill would also add "emergency contact information" to the definition of "highly restricted personal information."
