A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 4642 AS REPORTED FROM COMMITTEE

The Michigan Vehicle Code contains a number of provisions that refer to "authorized emergency vehicles," and provides a definition of that term.  House Bill 4642 would amend the definition of "authorized emergency vehicle" within the Vehicle Code to include vehicles of volunteer members of a unit trained to respond to emergencies if the vehicles are authorized by the chief of an organized fire department, a county sheriff, or director of the Department of State Police.

Currently the term "authorized emergency vehicle" applies to vehicles of a fire department, police department, ambulances, or privately owned vehicles of volunteer or paid fire fighters if authorized by the chief of an organized fire department, or privately owned vehicles of volunteer or paid members of a life support agency licensed by the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs if authorized by that life support agency.  House Bill 4642 would add to that definition the language underlined in the first paragraph of the summary.
