A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 4642 AS INTRODUCED 5-12-11
The Michigan Vehicle Code contains a number of provisions that refer to "authorized emergency vehicles," and provides a definition of that term. The bill would amend the Vehicle Code to include vehicles of volunteer members of an emergency management unit within the definition of "authorized emergency vehicle," if the vehicles are authorized by the chief of an organized fire department or other governmental entity.
Currently the term applies to vehicles of a fire department, police department, ambulances, or privately owned vehicles of volunteer or paid fire fighters if authorized by the chief of an organized fire department, or privately owned vehicles of volunteer or paid members of a life support agency licensed by the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs if authorized by that life support agency. House Bill 4642 would add to that definition the language underlined in the first paragraph of the summary.
