Pastor Josh Presley of Colonvillle Bible Church of Clare offered the following invocation:
Gracious Heavenly Father, we bow before Your throne, acknowledging that You are the Creator and sustainer of life and liberty, and true happiness is found in submission to You alone.
Father, we thank You for Your grace that You have given to us as a nation. We are blessed and because of Your blessings, we have been able to bless other nations. We ask for Your mercy that we might be the light that shines in the darkness. I pray that we would make decisions that would honor You and reflect Your glory. We know that Your word teaches that there is no authority except from You, and those who have been placed in authority have been placed there by You. So we thank You for putting every one of these Senators in a place of authority that they are in.
Father, I pray that the decisions that are made here today would honor You as the supreme authority of absolute truth. Father, we need to humbly seek You and ask for forgiveness for the times that we have cared about vain praise and temporary pleasures instead of seeking true fellowship with You through the provision of Your Son Jesus Christ.
As we open the Senate this morning, I pray for Your wisdom to shine through. I pray the same thing that the writer of Proverbs wrote that we would trust in the Lord with all our heart and not lean on our own understanding, and in all our ways that we would acknowledge You and ask that You would straighten our paths.
Lord, help us to be wise not in our own eyes. Help us to fear the Lord and to turn away from evil, both individually and as a nation. May we call upon the name of the Lord through the person of Jesus Christ. May the discussion and votes that take place here today honor and glorify You. We pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
The President, Lieutenant Governor Calley, led the members of the Senate in recital of the Pledge of Allegiance.

Senator Gregory’s statement is as follows:
I rise today to call on this body to support my amendment to restore the Michigan earned income tax credit. Michigan’s working families—emphasis on working—rely on the EITC to survive, to keep a roof over their heads, clothes on their backs, and food on their tables.
In 2008, over 702,000 families and childless individuals in Michigan received the state credit, bringing nearly $144 million to local economies in Michigan. That is over 700,000 working families who could have about a thousand dollars more in their pocket to buy a new stove, fix their car to get to work, take a sick child to the doctor, or heat their home. Do these seem like extravagant expenses to you? I think not, and I urge you to support this amendment.
I urge you to treat Michigan’s working families as well as you treat businesses. I call on all of my colleagues to support this amendment to restore the Michigan earned income tax credit that helps working families make ends meet. I ask for your support.
