HOUSE BILL No. 5062

 

July 24, 2007, Introduced by Reps. Opsommer, Green, Agema, Shaffer, Moss, Meekhof, Hoogendyk, Stahl and Emmons and referred to the Committee on Government Operations.

 

     A bill to require certain state officials to make certain

 

reports to the governor and to the legislature.

 

THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MICHIGAN ENACT:

 

     Sec. 1. (1) The auditor general shall review and conduct a

 

study that estimates the cost of state payments made to illegal

 

immigrants and the cost of state services used by illegal

 

immigrants.

 

     (2) The auditor general shall review and conduct a study of

 

all available state remedies to recover any money owing from the

 

federal government to this state for the reimbursement of costs

 

incurred by this state resulting from illegal immigration.

 

     (3) The reviews and studies required of the auditor general

 

under this act shall be considered part of a post audit of the


 

financial transactions of this state.

 

     (4) On or before November 1, 2007, the auditor general shall

 

file a written report with the governor and each house of the

 

legislature that details all of the following:

 

     (a) The findings of the reviews and studies described in this

 

section together with available remedies and recommendations as to

 

how to best pursue a course of recovery of unpaid reimbursable

 

costs.

 

     (b) The costs incurred by this state resulting from illegal

 

immigration that are not reimbursable by the federal government.
