A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 5957 AS INTRODUCED 4-8-08
Under current law, a person born after January 1, 1960─anyone under the age of about 48─cannot be sold a regular hunting license in Michigan without showing proof of either:
· Previous hunting experience as demonstrated by showing a previous hunting license from Michigan, another state or province, or another country. (Apprentice licenses or the equivalent do not satisfy this requirement.)
· Completion of a hunter safety course in Michigan, another state or province, or another country.
A person with previous experience or hunter safety training who lacks proof of it may obtain a hunting license by submitting a signed affidavit attesting to his or her previous experience or training. In addition, current law allows persons without previous experience or training to hunt for up to two license years as an apprentice hunter under specified conditions.
House Bill 5957 would allow a person born after January 1, 1960 to also qualify for a regular hunting license by showing proof of a concealed weapon license issued by Michigan, another state or province, or another country or by signing an affidavit that he or she has such a license.
