            House Resolution No. 253.

A resolution recognizing April 28, 2006, as Arbor Day 2006 in the state of Michigan.

Whereas, The members of the House of Representatives are dedicated to the planting and nurturing of trees throughout our state; and

Whereas, The beauty of Arbor Day is that, rather than looking backward to events of the past, this day looks forward with promise for a future filled with trees. Arbor Day celebrates the planting and nurturing of trees. It celebrates all the ways trees enrich our lives and stabilize our environment; and

Whereas, Arbor Day first appeared in the United States in 1872.  That same year, J. Sterling Morton is credited with introducing this counties first Arbor Day resolution; and

Whereas, Today, above all, Arbor Day is for children, parents, and grandparents to strengthen the bond between generations by planting trees together.  It presents a tremendous opportunity to teach fundamental lessons about stewardship of our natural resources and caring for our environment.  There is no more powerful demonstration than helping children plant and care for trees that their own children and grandchildren will enjoy; now, therefore, be it

Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of this legislative body recognize April 28, 2006, as Arbor Day 2006 in the state of Michigan. Therefore, this day is hereby especially set apart and dedicated for tree planting. We urge the people of Michigan to recognize the vital importance of tree planting.
