Heavenly Father, we come to You this morning to ask for Your help. There are many of us who have decisions that we must make on this day. We pray that You will give us wisdom, guidance, and direction as we make those decisions so we can find ways to make our state an even better place in which to live.

Lord, today is also a day of remembering. We remember, especially at this time, those who have fallen in the line of duty. We pray that You will continue to comfort and care for the families and loved ones of these people who have given the supreme sacrifice on behalf of our country.

We pray for those, too, who have been wounded in action and who live with the scars and the pains of their wounds. We pray that You will continue to care for them and bless them. We were reminded yesterday that there are many veterans who are suffering for various reasons, many who are homeless. We pray that You will provide for the needs of those veterans, Lord.

We pray for those who are in the heat of action today. We pray for those who stand in harm's way. We pray that You will protect them. We pray that each and every one of them will be able to return home safely once again. Be near their families, and give them comfort.

Lord, we thank You for our country. We thank You for this great land. We thank You for the brave men and women who have stood to defend and protect this land.

In Your most holy name. Amen.

The President, Lieutenant Governor Cherry, led the members of the Senate in recital of the Pledge of Allegiance.

Statements

Senators Stamas, Scott, Switalski and Bishop asked and were granted unanimous consent to make statements and moved that the statements be printed in the Journal.

The motion prevailed.

Senator Stamas' statement is as follows:

Senate colleagues, on this solemn day I rise to recognize and remember a constituent of the 36th District who recently gave his life serving our county in the United States Army. Sergeant Brad Wentz of Gladwin, Michigan, died this past Friday while serving in Iraq. According to reports, Sergeant Wentz was traveling in a convoy when his vehicle was struck by either an improvised explosive device or a rocket-propelled grenade. There were no other fatalities in the incident. His death is still under investigation.

Sergeant Wentz joined the Army and he completed his basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, in July 2001, and was part of the Muskegon Base, 180th Army Reserve Transportation Company. He was stationed at Camp Anaconda in Iraq at the time of his death. He had followed in the tradition of military service of many family members, including his grandfather. His brother Chris is currently attending Officer Candidate School in the United States Marine Corps.

His grandmother Michele Hisey said that Brad's daughter Jerzey was the light of his life. He was a great father and a great husband. His family was very important to him. According to his family members, Sergeant Wentz loved to hunt, fish, and snowmobile and go water tubing on Wixom Lake. His greatest love was hockey, and he loved being a member of the Gladwin Hockey Association. He leaves behind him a wife Tami and their 16-month-old daughter Jerzey.

On this solemn day when we honor all our fallen soldiers, it is with a heavy heart that I bring news of another Michigan son lost. I would like to take this opportunity to convey to the entire family the chamber's deepest sympathy for their loss that has occurred and our gratitude for the family's service to our country.

A moment of silence was observed in memory of U.S. Army Sergeant Brad A. Wentz.

Senator Scott's statement is as follows:

There was a legislative luncheon held yesterday that brought close to 200 insurance agents right here to the State Capitol. You can be sure that I took advantage of this opportunity to interact and spark discussion with those in attendance. In fact, I had lunch with my agent, who just so happens to be a constituent. Of course, he's very much aware of my continuing efforts to do something about the high costs of auto and homeowners insurance in this state, and though we may not always see eye to eye, he understands my passion and my commitment to answer the call of my constituents to assist them in bringing some relief with their insurance premiums.

I am truly hopeful that many of you were able to participate in some constructive dialogue as well. In order to bring about real change, we need this chamber to come together and work on real solutions. Indeed, as I continue to wage war on the high costs of insurance, I again ask for your support.

I extend well wishes to all of my colleagues on this holiday weekend. Let us all take time to remember and to reflect on the many sacrifices of our nation's veterans and our troops all over the world who so unselfishly and so bravely are serving our country.

Senator Switalski's statement is as follows:

My statement is really along the lines of an introduction, but I want to make a little statement out of it too. I've got a group of students from Roseville here with their teacher Irene Kepler, who doubles as a city councilwoman in Roseville, up in the east Gallery. I would like to welcome them here today. They are involved in student government, and I believe among that group I've got a couple of my former and current soccer players whom I coached. Colleagues will recall the trials and tribulations of my team in the past, when we suffered through a couple of winless seasons, but I am happy to announce that this year we are undefeated.

Now, one of my top midfielders, Shelby, I believe, is up there and she not only was a great midfielder, but a great looking midfielder. She's one of the greatest midfielders I've ever had, and she is joined up there by my current midfielder, Chayne Campbell, who is an outstanding player, very physical. In our last game, our opponent was short a few players, and Chayne volunteered to play for the other side. In the course of that game, my other players learned what it was like to be crunched by Chayne Campbell. She earned a lot of respect from her colleagues.

I ask my colleagues to welcome my guests here this morning.

Senator Bishop's statement is as follows:

In the east Gallery, I have two of my favorite constituents from Rochester Hills, Michigan, David Lomasney and his son Adam Lomasney, who have come up today to visit the State Capitol and witness the Senate in session and our ceremony today. I thought I might rise to greet them and let the members of the Senate greet them.

Welcome to the Senate today.
