The House agreed to the title as amended.
Rep. Bieda, having reserved the right to explain his protest against the passage of the bill, made the following statement:
"Mr. Speaker and members of the House:
I voted 'no' on HB 5701 because the entire parenting plan proposal seeks to create a situation in law to dictate what parents should or should not agree to regarding the care of their children. The bill would also prohibit the Friend of the Court or the Court from advocating on behalf of either parent or a minor child -- something that is in complete contradiction of existing law which require the FOC to advocate for the best interests of the child. While I support parenting plans, I do not agree with the approach advocated here. Thus I voted no."

Rep. Zelenko, having reserved the right to explain her nay vote, made the following statement:
"Mr. Speaker and members of the House:
I voted No on Senate Bill 1296, because separate but equal has been proven time and again to result in discrimination. Single-sex schools would be inherently unequal, and thus unconstitutional.
Title IX currently permits select single-sex classes in physical education or to remedy past discrimination for example; it doesn't allow schools to segregate students arbitrarily. What is needed is a thoughtful examination of the diverse single-sex schools that already exist, to see what works and what doesn't before ushering in single sex schools. To improve performance, schools should focus more on academics, discipline, smaller classes, more parental involvement and better teacher training, rather than splitting up boys and girls.
Additionally, without the opposite sex, students are denied a learning environment representative of real life. This deprives them of the opportunity to develop skills for interaction with peers regardless of gender in their work environment and fosters ignorance and prejudice towards the other gender.
Supporters point to the successes of single-sex private schools when justifying the move for single sex public schools; but many educators attribute much of the academic successes of these private schools to their smaller class sizes, engaged parents, well-trained teachers, and strong academic emphasis.
It is for these reasons that I voted NO on Senate Bill 1296."

House Resolution No. 286.
A resolution congratulating the Grosse Pointe North Baseball Team on their Division I State Championship.
Whereas, It is a pleasure to join with the families, the entire school, all of Grosse Pointe, and the state of Michigan in celebrating the achievements of the Grosse Pointe North Baseball Team on its wonderful success over the season. With the fine record this squad attained, which has culminated in a Division I State Championship, this group of disciplined student-athletes has generated great pride throughout the state; and
Whereas, Much to the delight of their loyal fans, the Norsemen have earned the respect of prep sports followers throughout Michigan through their talent, teamwork, and determination. As opponents have found out all season long, this is a team that brings unity and a positive outlook to all levels of competition. In the face of challenge and pressure, this is a group of young people who maintain their focus on making their dreams come true and accepting nothing less than their best effort; and
Whereas, While this team has received numerous individual accolades, including placing three student-athletes on the All-State Dream Team, another student-athlete on the Division I First Team, and set numerous individual and team school records, this team was successful only because of its selflessness and its ability to work together towards their goals; and
Whereas, Winning titles or compiling outstanding seasons is never a fluke. While anything can happen in a single game, all teams show their true abilities and dedication over a long season. What distinguishes the best, however, is the effort that appears in practice, far removed from the excitement of game day. We admire the efforts, team spirit, and preparation of these talented young people; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of this legislative body congratulate the Grosse Pointe North Baseball Team on their Division I State Championship.
Pending the reference of the resolution to a committee,
Rep. Ward moved that Rule 77 be suspended and the resolution be considered at this time.
The motion prevailed, 3/5 of the members present voting therefor.
The question being on the adoption of the resolution,
The resolution was adopted.

House Resolution No. 287.
A resolution to memorialize the Congress of the United States to enact legislation to direct the Joint Committee on the Library to accept the donation of a bust depicting Sojourner Truth for display in our nation's capitol.
Whereas, Sojourner Truth was a towering figure among the founders of the movement for women's suffrage in the United States, and no monument that does not include her can accurately represent this important development in our nation's history; and
Whereas, The statue known as the Portrait Monument was presented to Congress in 1920 to mark the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment guaranteeing women the right to vote. It is located in the rotunda of our nation's capitol and portrays several early suffragists who were Sojourner Truth's contemporaries. The Portrait Monument, however, does not include Sojourner Truth, the only African American among this group of pioneers; and
Whereas, On December 19, 2005, the United States House of Representatives passed a bill, H.R. 4510, to direct the Joint Committee on the Library to accept the donation of a bust depicting Sojourner Truth and to display the bust in a suitable location in our nation's capitol; and
Whereas, Under this legislation, the depiction of Sojourner Truth is to be displayed not later than 2 years after the date of the enactment of the act. The Joint Committee on the Library shall accept the donation of a bust depicting Sojourner Truth, subject to such terms and conditions as the Joint Committee considers appropriate; now, therefore be it
Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of this legislative body memorialize the Congress of the United States to enact legislation to direct the Joint Committee on the Library to accept the donation of a bust depicting Sojourner Truth for display in a suitable location in our nation's capitol; and be it further
Resolved, That copies of this resolution be transmitted to the President of the United States, the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, and the members of the Michigan congressional delegation.
The resolution was referred to the Committee on Government Operations.
