     A bill to amend 1976 PA 399, entitled

 

"Safe drinking water act,"

 

(MCL 325.1001 to 325.1023) by adding section 11e.

 

THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MICHIGAN ENACT:

 

     Sec. 11e. (1) The arsenic in drinking water grant fund is

 

created within the state treasury. The state treasurer may receive

 

money or other assets from any source for deposit into the fund.

 

The state treasurer shall direct the investment of the fund.

 

     (2) Money in the fund at the close of the fiscal year shall

 

remain in the fund and shall not lapse to the general fund.

 

     (3) The state treasurer shall credit to the fund interest and

 

earnings from fund investments.

 

     (4) The department shall expend money from the fund, upon

 

appropriation, to provide grants to persons whose source of


 

drinking water exceeds the state drinking water standard for

 

arsenic to do either of the following:

 

     (a) Treat the drinking water to reduce the levels of arsenic.

 

     (b) Obtain an alternative source of drinking water.

 

     (5) The department shall establish a grant program to receive

 

and evaluate applications for receipt of grants from the fund. The

 

department shall require a grant recipient to provide at least 20%

 

of the total cost of the grant project.

 

     (6) As used in this section, "fund" means the arsenic in

 

drinking water grant fund created in subsection (1).
