SENATE BILL No. 72

     A bill to amend 1976 PA 451, entitled

 

"The revised school code,"

 

(MCL 380.1 to 380.1852) by adding section 1304.

 

THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MICHIGAN ENACT:

 

     Sec. 1304. (1) The board of a school district, local act

 

school district, or intermediate school district or board of

 

directors of a public school academy shall ensure that the pledge

 

of allegiance to the flag of the United States is offered each

 

school day to public school pupils in the public schools it

 

operates.

 

     (2) The board of a school district, local act school district,

 

or intermediate school district or board of directors of a public

 

school academy may, at its discretion, provide that the pledge of


 

allegiance to the flag of the United States or the national anthem,

 

or both, as determined by the board or board of directors, is

 

offered at after-school events, including, but not limited to,

 

interscholastic athletic events, in at least grades 9 to 12.

 

     (3) A pupil shall not be compelled, against the pupil's

 

objections or those of the pupil's parent or legal guardian, to

 

recite the pledge of allegiance.
