FRED MEIJER PARK & TRAIL H.B. 6110 (S-3): FLOOR ANALYSIS

House Bill 6110 (Substitute S-3 as reported without amendment)
Sponsor: Representative Dave Hildenbrand
House Committee: Government Operations
Senate Committee: Natural Resources and Environmental Affairs

CONTENT
The bill would amend Part 741 (State Parks System) of the Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act to designate State-owned land and a recreational trail as the "Fred Meijer White Pine Trail State Park" and the "Fred Meijer Berry Junction Trail", and require the development of criteria for naming State parks and recreational facilities.
Specifically, the bill would require that the State-owned land containing the White Pine Trail, which traverses an abandoned rail corridor between Comstock Park and Cadillac, be known as the "Fred Meijer White Pine Trail State Park".

In addition, the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) would have to facilitate the establishment of a recreational trail that would traverse, in part, the abandoned rail corridor running from White Lake Drive, south of Whitehall, to Lake Avenue in North Muskegon. The trail would be known as the "Fred Meijer Berry Junction Trail".

The DNR, in consultation with the Citizens Committee for Michigan State Parks, the Natural Resources Commission, and the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund Board, also would have to develop criteria for naming State parks and other State-owned recreational facilities. Within one year after the bill's effective date, the DNR would have to present the criteria to the standing committees of the Senate and the House of Representatives with jurisdiction relating primarily to natural resources and State parks.
