Senate Bill 72 (as introduced 1-25-05)
Sponsor: Senator Patricia L. Birkholz
Committee: Education

Date Completed: 3-2-05

CONTENT
The bill would amend the Revised School Code to require that boards of school districts, intermediate school districts, and public school academies ensure that the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of the United States was offered each school day to public school pupils in the public schools the boards operated.

A school board could, at its discretion, provide that the Pledge of Allegiance or the National Anthem, or both, was offered at after-school events, including interscholastic athletic events, in at least grades 9 to 12.

A pupil could not be compelled, against the pupil's objections or those of the pupil's parent or legal guardian, to recite the pledge.
