A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 6085 AS INTRODUCED 5-18-06
House Bill 6085 would amend the Michigan Vehicle Code to require that United States citizenship be disclosed on driver licenses.
The bill would require that an applicant for an operator's or chauffeur's license, if a U. S. citizen, provide a statement attesting to citizenship. Then, the secretary of state would be required to issue a license containing the information that the licensee was a U. S. citizen.
Currently under the law, an applicant for a driver's license must provide to the secretary of state his or her name, date of birth, residential address, height, sex, eye color, a signature, and, to the extent required to comply with federal law, the applicant's social security number. In addition, if he or she wishes, organ donor information can be provided, as well as a mailing address. All of these provisions would be retained under House Bill 6085.
