A bill to amend 1964 PA 287, entitled
"An act to provide for the organization and functions of the
state boards of education under the constitutions of 1908 and
1963; to provide for the appointment and functions of the
superintendent of public instruction under the constitution of
1963; and to repeal certain acts and parts of acts,"
by amending section 9a (MCL 388.1009a), as amended by 1983
PA 240.
THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MICHIGAN ENACT:
1 Sec. 9a. The special education advisory committee is
2 created in the department of education and shall consist of not
3 less than 9 and not more
than 27 33 members , who shall be
4 appointed, in
multiples of 3, appointed by
the state board of
5 education for terms of 3
years. , except that of the members
6 first appointed in
1983 or thereafter, 1/3 shall be appointed for
7 a term of 3 years, 1/3
for a term of 2 years, and 1/3 for a term
8 of 1 year. The person within the department directly responsible
1 for special education
programs and such other persons as
2 appointed by the committee to represent other departments,
3 agencies, and 4-year colleges and universities, upon consultation
4 with those departments, agencies, and colleges and universities,
5 shall be ex officio members of the committee. Each year the
6 committee shall elect its
a chairperson and such other
7 officers as it deems considers
necessary. Members of the
8 committee may be reimbursed, to the extent provided by the state
9 board, for expenses incurred in performing their functions. The
10 committee shall act as an adviser to the state board of education
11 in the field of special education.
