A bill to allow public officials to elect not to receive
compensation for serving in their elected or appointed
positions.
THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MICHIGAN ENACT:
1 Sec. 1. (1) Upon written notice to the legislative body of
2 the village, city, township, or county in which a person serves
3 as a public official, the person may elect not to receive
4 compensation for serving as a public official.
5 (2) As used in this act:
6 (a) "Legislative body" means any of the following:
7 (i) The council, commission, or other entity vested with the
8 legislative power of a village.
9 (ii) The council or other entity vested with the legislative
10 power of a city.
11 (iii) The township board of a township.
1 (iv) The county board of commissioners of a county.
2 (b) "Public official" means a person who is elected or
3 appointed to any of the following:
4 (i) A public office of a city, village, township, or county
5 in this state.
6 (ii) A department, board, agency, institution, commission,
7 authority, division, council, or other public entity of a city,
8 village, township, or county in this state.
