A bill to protect and promote the health and welfare of
infants; to provide for training of certain individuals regarding
infant safety; and to prescribe the powers and duties of certain
state departments and agencies.
THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MICHIGAN ENACT:
1 Sec. 1. As used in this act:
2 (a) "Child care organization", "child caring institution",
3 "children's camp", "child care center", "day care center",
4 "family day care home", and "group day care home" mean those
5 terms as defined in section 1 of 1973 PA 116, MCL 722.111.
6 (b) "Department" means the department of community health.
7 (c) "Person who has significant interaction with children"
8 means a person who is 1 or more of the following:
9 (i) A first-time parent.
10 (ii) A WIC program recipient.
1 (iii) A person who works in a child care organization, a
2 child caring institution, a children's camp, a child or day care
3 center, a family day care home, or a group day care home.
4 (d) "WIC program" means the special supplemental food program
5 for women, infants, and children under the child nutrition act of
6 1966, Public Law 89-642, 42 U.S.C. 1771 to 1776, 1777 to 1786,
7 and 1788 to 1791.
8 Sec. 2. The department shall include in a class or training
9 program offered to a person who has significant contact with
10 children a course in infant cardiopulmonary resuscitation
11 approved by the department and offered or approved by the Red
12 Cross, American heart association, a licensed hospital, or a
13 comparable organization or institution.
14 Sec. 3. The department may contract with a private agency,
15 corporation, or association in order to comply with this act.
