                                                                                 A bill to amend 1949 PA 300, entitled                                             

                                                                                

    "Michigan vehicle code,"                                                    

                                                                                

    by amending section 221 (MCL 257.221), as amended by 1998 PA 64.            

                                                                                

                THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MICHIGAN ENACT:                      

                                                                                

1       Sec. 221.  (1) The secretary of state shall create and                      

                                                                                

2   maintain a computerized central file of all applications for                

                                                                                

3   registration of motor vehicles and is not required to retain any            

                                                                                

4   other record of the application.  The computerized central file             

                                                                                

5   shall be interfaced with the law enforcement information network            

                                                                                

6   as provided in the L.E.I.N. policy council act of 1974, 1974 PA             

                                                                                

7   163, MCL 28.211 to 28.216.                                                  

                                                                                

8       (2) The secretary of state shall preserve the records                       

                                                                                

9   described in subsection (1) for 3 years after the date of                   

                                                                                

10  registration.  The records shall be available to state and                  

                                                                                

11  federal agencies, school districts, and the friend of the court             

                                                                                


                                                                                

1   as provided under section 4 of the L.E.I.N. policy council act of           

                                                                                

2   1974, 1974 PA 163, MCL 28.214, and rules promulgated under that             

                                                                                

3   section, and to the public through the secretary of state's                 

                                                                                

4   commercial look-up service.                                                 

                                                                                

5       Enacting section 1.  This amendatory act does not take                      

                                                                                

6   effect unless Senate Bill No. _____ or House Bill No. 4183                  

                                                                                

7   (request no. 00845'03*) of the 92nd Legislature is enacted into             

                                                                                

8   law.
