A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 5989 AS INTRODUCED 6-9-04
The concealed weapons law, Public Act 372 of 1927, provides that a renewal of a CCW license should, generally speaking, be issued in the same manner as an original license.
The bill would require the concealed weapons licensing board to issue or deny a renewal license within 30 days after the application is properly submitted. If the board does not issue or deny the renewal license within the required time, the original license would be valid for an additional 180 days, or until the board issues or denies a renewal license, whichever occurs sooner. The bill would also waive the fingerprinting requirements for a renewal license, and prohibit the assessment of a charge for fingerprinting.
Currently under the act, an individual submitting an original or renewal application must have a set of fingerprints taken by the county sheriff or local police agency if that local police agency maintains fingerprinting capability. The fingerprints are forwarded for analysis to the Department of State Police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The act provides that if the fingerprints are taken by the local police agency, the applicant shall pay the agency a fee of $15.

FISCAL IMPACT:
The fiscal impact of the bill cannot be determined, as it would depend on the number of renewals within each county.
