e/d/s = entered during session
Rev. Dan Dickerson, Pastor of Calvary Baptist Church in Midland, offered the following invocation:
"Father God, how we thank You for the privilege to be here and we pray from Your very special hand a blessing on each of these men and women who represent us. We thank You for their willingness to be servant leaders. We pray Your special blessing upon them and their families and upon this special session today. Lord, we know that You have warned the children of Israel in the Old Testament after they entered into the Promised Land that when they were blessed with prosperity they should beware lest they forget the Creator, sovereign God of Heaven. Lord, we do long to have You bless America, our President, our state, our leaders and our families. We know that the Scriptures tell us that righteousness exalts a nation but sin is a reproach to any people. Lord, we know that the Psalmists David said that the wicked shall be turned into hell and all the nations that forget God . We pray, Lord, that You will bless America and enable us to be a people worthy of Your blessing. Grant us a spirit of repentance for our sins. Enable us to repent in word and heart and in action. Forgive us for allowing the priority of prayer and bible reading in our schools to be removed. Thank You that this is still our privilege here. Forgive us for neglecting prayer and bible reading in our personal lives and in our families, and sometimes even in our churches. Forgive us for allowing the fear of man which brings despair to hinder us and help us to have faith in God which brings safety.
Lord, we agree in heart with the prayer that was prayed in the House of Representatives in Kansas:
We acknowledge that Your word says, 'woe to those who call evil good,' but that is exactly what we have done. We have lost our spiritual equilibrium and inverted our values. We confess that:
We have ridiculed the absolute truth of Your Word and called it moral pluralism;
We have worshiped other gods and called it multiculturalism;
We have endorsed perversions and called it alternative lifestyle;
We have exploited the poor and called it the lottery;
We have neglected the needy and called it self-preservation;
We have rewarded laziness and called it welfare;
We have killed our unborn and called it choice;
We have shot abortionists and called it justifiable;
We have neglected to discipline our children and called it building esteem;
We have abused power and called it political savvy;
We have coveted our neighbors' possessions and called it ambition;
We have polluted the air with profanity and pornography and called it freedom of expression;
We have ridiculed the time-honored values of our forefathers and called it enlightenment.
Lord, we have always needed You--You are God. In these days of terrorist acts--the anthrax deaths, the war against terrorism--we now face great need in our land as never before. At least not in a long time. So, in these days we humble ourselves before Your sovereignty and before Your holiness. We humbly ask that by Your grace we might become a righteous nation and that You will bless us. We ask that You will grant us not simply what we desire but what we need. Thank You for the cleansing of sin available through faith in the blood of Jesus Christ, His death, His burial and His resurrection. We pray for these blessings and ask for this cleansing and revival in repentance in our nation in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen."
