A bill to authorize the board of a school district to award high school diplomas to World War II veterans under certain cir- cumstances; and to prescribe duties and responsibilities of cer- tain state officers and officials. THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MICHIGAN ENACT: 1 Sec. 1. The board of a school district may award a high 2 school diploma to a military veteran if the military veteran is 3 at least 65 years of age at the time of application to the board 4 for a high school diploma and the board is satisfied that all of 5 the following are true: 6 (a) Before graduation from a high school, the military vet- 7 eran enlisted in or was drafted into the armed forces of the 8 United States during World War II between December 7, 1941 and 9 September 2, 1945. 03568'01 JJG 2 1 (b) At the time he or she was drafted into or enlisted in 2 the armed forces of the United States, the military veteran was 3 enrolled in a high school in the school district to which the 4 application is made. 5 (c) The military veteran did not graduate from high school. 6 (d) The miliary veteran served under honorable conditions 7 during World War II. 8 Sec. 2. (1) The application form shall be prescribed by the 9 veterans affairs directorate of the department of veterans and 10 military affairs. 11 (2) The application may be completed by the veteran or the 12 veteran's spouse, brother or sister, children, or grandchildren. 13 Sec. 3. The department of military and veterans affairs 14 shall notify the board of each school district of this act and 15 take steps to encourage each school district to meet the objec- 16 tive of this act. 03568'01 Final page.
