ACCIDENT REPORT: INCREASE MINIMUM - H.B. 4486: COMMITTEE SUMMARY

House Bill 4486 (as passed by the House)

Sponsor: Representative Joseph Rivert

House Committee: Civil Law and the Judiciary

Senate Committee: Transportation and Tourism

Date Completed: 4-16-02

CONTENT

The bill would amend the Michigan Vehicle Code to increase the amount of property damage caused by a car accident that triggers a requirement that the driver contact the police. Currently, the driver of a motor vehicle involved in an accident resulting in the injury or death of a person, or in property damage to an apparent extent totaling $400 or more, must report the accident to the nearest or most convenient police station or officer. The bill would increase the property damage amount to $1,000.

FISCAL IMPACT

The bill would have a minimal fiscal impact on State and local law enforcement. It is possible that the bill could result in fewer accident reports' being necessary, requiring less paperwork and data collection by agencies.
