A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 6506 AS INTRODUCED 11-7-02
House Bill 6506 would amend the Revised School Code to require that not later than August 1, 2001, the State Board of Education review the mathematics content standards, and revise the standards to ensure that they are identical or similar to the mathematics standards adopted by the California State Board of Education and currently in effect in that state.
Currently under the law, the state board recommends model core academic curriculum content standards to local school districts for adoption, and those standards are periodically updated. These knowledge and skill content standards set forth desired learning objectives in math, science, reading, history, geography, economics, American government, and writing for all children at each stage of school. They are based upon the Michigan K-12 Program Standards of Quality, in an effort to ensure that high academic standards, skills, and subject matter content are built into the instructional goals of all school districts for all children. Further, the law requires that the Michigan educational assessment program (MEAP) and the high school proficiency exam be based on these standards.
