A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 5947 AS INTRODUCED 4-23-02
House Bill 5947 would amend the General Property Tax Act to require that the township treasurer remain in his or her office from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. to receive taxes on the last day that the taxes are due and payable before being returned as delinquent.
The portion of the act that deals with the collection of taxes currently requires the township treasurer to remain in his or her office on each Friday in the month of December from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. to receive taxes and specifies that he or she is to receive taxes upon a weekday when they are offered. The act also allows for an exception to this requirement in case a Friday in the month of December is Christmas eve, Christmas day, New Year's eve, or another day designated by the township as a holiday for township employees; in this case, the township treasurer must receive taxes on the day immediately proceeding the holiday. The bill would eliminate these requirements.
